Turkish Cuisine Class 6th Session on December 13rd, 2014

IMG 3279The Raindrop members met for the 6th session of the Turkish Cuisine Class on December 13th, Saturday. This was the last session of the s

emester. The menu of the week was Bulgur salad (kisir), Chicken Shish Kabab, Carrot salad, and Toasted Bread Desert.

After the cooking instructions and lunch, the Turkish Cooking Lovers said goodbye to each other till next year, 2015.

Turkish Cuisine Class 5th Session on December 6th

IMG 0428The fifth session of the Turkish Cuisine Class was held on December 6th, Saturday afternoon at Raindrop Turkish House - NW Branch. The instructors taught how to cook Toothpick Kabab, Couscous Pilaf, Green Salad, and Cinnamon/Tahini Cookies.

As all other classes, the recipes are distributed to the students at the beginning of the class. The step by step procedures for cooking the dishes in menu are detailly explained, so the students would able to repeat these steps successfully at home. The students also took notes for the instructor's special tips to make thses dishes more delicious.

Book Club Meeting on December 3rd, 2014

BookClub Dec2014 smallThe Raindrop members met for the Book Club on December 3rd evening.

The book of this meeting was "I am Malala: The Girl Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban". It is a memoir by the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

"I AM MALALA is the remarkeble tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girl's education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons."

The discussion on this great book was very productive. Beside the content in the book, the members also talked about the education problems in several countries and the struggles especially the girls had to overcome to receive a good education. Along the discussion, the readers also enjoyed the light supper.

Turkish Cuisine Class 4rd session on Nov 22nd

IMG 0608 copyThe fourth session of the Cooking class held on November 22nd, Saturday between 1-4 pm. The menu of the week was Flat Bread with Feta Cheese and Spinach, red lentil patties, cyprus pilaf and wet cake with figs. The instructors gave important tips about cooking the dishes in the menu. Ms. Duygu also showed how to decorate the wet cake with whip cream. The students and Raindrop volunteers enjoyed the delicious late lunch after the class time with warm and friendly converstaion.

Women's Social on November 19th

celebration-315079 640Raindrop women came together for the Women's Social on November 19th, Wednesday. The topic of thie Women's Social was Thanksgiving. The Raindrop volunteers prepared a wonderful early Thanksgiving dinner for the guests. Beside the traditional Turkish dishes, thanksgiving turkey was served. After dinner, Raindrop volunteer Debra Anazonwu talked about the history of the Thanskgiving celebration. This brief information reminded us the importance of this special day for the people lives in United States. The night followed with the games. One of the game was about Noah's pudding. The guests sorted the ingredients of this traditonal Turkish desert in specially decorated glass jars.

Lone Star -Kingwood International Education Week

lsc-kingwood-international-education-week-2014Raindrop Turkish House NW Branch participated the Lone Star College - Kingwood Campus International Education Week on Nov 18th, 2014. Celebrating diversity among students, faculty, staff and community is the goal of this annual event.

Raindrop volunteers represented the Turkey and introduced the aspects of Turkish culture. Ayse Akyuz showed Ebru (Water Marbling) demonstration and students had a chance to try this special Turkish art. Students also enjoyed the delicous Turkish baklava and borek.

Lone Star -Kingwood Office of Student Life and Intercultural Center thanked specially to Raindrop Turkish House for being part of the event.

Book Club on October 22th

BookClub Oct2014 v2The 1st Book Club meeting was held on Wednesday, October 25th evening. The participants discussed the book "Yes, I would Love Another Glass of Tea" by Katherine Branning.

Branning's work comprised of a series of imaginary letters written to Lady Mary Montagu, whose famous Embassy Letters were written in 1716-1718 during her stay in Turkey as the wife of the English ambassador. Branning uses themes dear to Lady Mary, such as culture, art, religion, women and daily life, to reflect on those same topics as encountered during the author's past thirty years of travel in Turkey.
